Kubernetes is the core skill of Platform Engineering. This step is not just about running containers across a cluster — it is about understanding how the control plane works, how networking and storage are abstracted, and how to operate Kubernetes in production. Everything in the Advanced tier builds directly on top of what you learn here.

Cloud and Infrastructure as Code

Platform Engineers provision and manage cloud infrastructure daily — not by clicking through consoles but by writing code. This step merges AWS and Terraform together because in practice you learn them simultaneously. You understand an AWS VPC by building one in Terraform. You understand Terraform state by managing real AWS resources.

CI/CD and Automation

CI/CD pipelines are the delivery nervous system of every engineering organisation. Platform Engineers design, build, secure, and operate them — not just use them. This step covers building pipelines and hardening them because security cannot be retrofitted after the pipeline is already live.

GitOps and Continuous Delivery

GitOps is the defining practice of Platform Engineering — Git as the single source of truth for all infrastructure and application state, with automated reconciliation keeping the cluster continuously in sync. This step comes before Observability because GitOps becomes the deployment model used throughout everything else you build as a Platform Engineer.

Observability and Monitoring

Platform Engineers build and operate the observability infrastructure that all engineering teams depend on. When something breaks at 2am, your monitoring stack is what tells the on-call engineer what is wrong, where it is, and why. This step covers all three pillars — metrics, logs, and traces — and the process for using them together to find root cause fast.

Secrets and Security

Secrets mismanagement is the most common source of production security incidents. Platform security means securing the entire delivery chain — from how credentials are stored and accessed, to how container images are signed, to how running workloads are monitored for threats. Platform Engineers design and operate the security baseline that every team builds on.

Platform Engineering Foundations

This step separates Platform Engineers from DevOps Engineers. Running workloads on Kubernetes is one skill. Building and operating the platform that hundreds of developers run their workloads on is a completely different skill. Multi-tenancy, policy enforcement, custom controllers, and cluster lifecycle management — this is what Platform Engineering looks like at companies like Razorpay, Hotstar, and PhonePe.

Internal Developer Platforms

An Internal Developer Platform is what distinguishes a mature Platform Engineering team from a team that just manages infrastructure. IDPs give developers self-service access to environments, databases, pipelines, and tooling — without opening tickets and without needing to know how anything works under the hood. This is the skill that gets Platform Engineers into staff-level roles.

FinOps and Cost Engineering

Cloud costs at scale require engineering, not spreadsheets. A Kubernetes cluster with no cost governance will silently waste 40–60% of its spend on oversized instances, idle resources, and missing Spot coverage. Platform Engineers are responsible for making infrastructure cost-efficient and giving every engineering team visibility into what their services actually cost.

Platform Engineer interviews test Kubernetes depth, infrastructure design, coding in Python or Go, system design, and behavioural questions about past incidents and architecture decisions.
